My take on all this is:
The crackernet will always get it for free. The average user won't
pay if you don't give him a little nudge -- but he also won't go out
of his way to find a cracked version. The best you can hope for
is to implement moderate level protection that will protect your
app from the casual user and remind him to pay up for the full use
of the app. The best schemes do not limit by time, or by features,
but by resource limitation. If you limit by time, well I might not be
able to review the software in the limit given ... that, and I resent
everybody and their dog taking "just a few bytes" from my memory
to prevent me from running their app after the expiration date. Maybe
I didn't want it anyway -- but now I've lost that memory for good. If you
limit by feature, I don't have a chance to fully evaluate your app. Maybe
that was the feature I really needed to see. Resource limitation is
basically
saying "you can't save more than X documents" -- for example, JFile limited
you to 2 databases, but you could do everything the program was
capable of doing for as long as you wanted, as long as you never needed
more than those 2 databases.
