Well if it doesn't exist, then there's nothing to crack, and this whole
topic is moot. The original question was, "why do crackers spend their
time cracking instead of creating?" and my answer to that question is,
"why would you want to create something that someone else has already
written?"
It's all about economy. You want to minimize time and money. That's
what crackers do. They don't want to spend money, and they definitely don't
want to spend their time recreating an application that already exists
because 1) they have better things to do 2) even if they did recreate the
application, they'll have a hard time selling it because a competitor
already exists. So it would be completely for personal use, not something
they can profit from.
Crackers would recreate the application if the existing one is so buggy to
the point of being unusable and laughable. IF that is the case, then the
crackers would form a company to sell the product and make a million bucks,
but then OTHER crackers will crack it. :)
If you don't want crackers to crack your program, then simply make your
program cheap enough so that its not worth a few hours of reverse
engineering. E.g. Sell your program for $3, and I'm sure that crackers
will buy the program rather than waste a few hours trying to break the nag
screen. Of course this doesn't stop them from redistributing the registered
application, but then they're already redistributing cracked versions
anyway, so you might as well let them buy it.
I think Stephen King is a genius. He sells his online book for $1. Only
a truly pathetic individual would waste any time getting a pirated copy of a
book that costs $1.
