Matt,

My formers are .12" (1/8") thick.

When completed, the model will be ~68" long. Even at this size I wouldn't want
the formers any thicker.

This is my first boat. I've spent time looking over boat/ship build threads on
PaperModelers.com The thickness was somewhat determined by the 225% enlargement
of the original model files.

How big is the ship you're designing? 3/8" seems like it will be very thick.

I don;t like to do the laminating either but I'm glad I did. The Board I use
can be purchased as double-thickness but I don't have a handy store to purchase
at. The laminating slows down the project nicely though - it gives me more time
to think about what I'm doing or planning to do.

I will admit, the 1/8" laminated board is a workout to cut. If I purchased the
double-thick, it would be somewhat easier.

I've used Foam-Cor for various support parts. The problem I have with it is two
fold: 1) it dulls cutting blades very quicly. And 2) I cannot seem to get good,
parallel cuts at my edges because of blade flex and control.

Another consideration is that the thicker the formers are, the wider "flat"
space they present when skinned. This could make the completed model look
blocky depending on the size. I love a smooth hull or fuselage when I see one,
but, frankly, when I've visited museums or shipyards, they generally have some
flex and stress pulls in them.

If you're concerned about having enough former width to attach the skins to, it
seems many if no most ship models have a wider strip of stock glued to the
former BEFORE the skins are attached so you're not trying to split the
difference trying to attach to thin formers.

how Thick are those laminated formers?
I am designing a ship and I specified my formers to be 3/8inch thick
or 9.5 mm
Simply becauase then I can lust laminate it to foamcore instead of
building up from cardstock,
Any opinons for or against foam core?
Thanks

Matt Sparks
