No, you don't need CloneDVD if you're only playing DVDs. In fact, you don't even need AnyDVD, unless the DVDs you're going to play have wrong region codes. But if you're also wanting to make copies of some copy-protected DVDs or audio CDs, then you'll need CloneDVD as well.
