Firstly, I'd like to say I'm glad to finally be posting after lurking in here for a few weeks. My name is Christian and I recently purchased my first Mac.
I'll describe my setup, resources and then try to paint a picture of what I'm hoping to accomplish with this Mac. My Macintosh is a 9500 that I bought off of Ebay for $30 dollars. It has a 120 mhz proc, 64 megs of ram, some pci ati video card, a 1 gig scsi hard drive, 8.1 installed, and it seems to run fine yet slow. I was able to scrounge a mouse, keyboard, and vga adapter from some of my mac friends. I'm a linux nerd and was drawn to Apple by Darwin. That being said, I'd like to run OSX on this computer. I'd also like to do this as cheaply as possible. I mean really cheap. It pains me to think that I may end up spending more upgrading this computer, with a 50 mhz fsb, than I could have bought another that was OSX ready, but that's also a little bit of the fun. Can I use a PCI nvidia video card? I went to nvidia's website to research this but their macintosh pages basically talk about apple shipping g4 boxes with agp nvidia cards. I couldnt' find any drivers on their site. Am I going to be able to just use the BSD drivers? I would appreciate any recommendations on what I'll need and the best places to get the cheapest prices on said items if any of you have the time. Example: from what I have gathered, it would behoove me to put an ide controller in this box, but can I use just any controller or do I have to buy the one's that say MAC and cost 4x as much. What's the best bang for the buck on cpu upgrade? What cpu upgrade manufacturer should I use? What generic ata66 pci ide controllers work? Will a 400-450mhz g4 be enough? How much ram should I go with? Where's the best place to get the cheapest deals? Can I use the cheapest usb pci card or do only specific ones work? I appreciate your time and again, thank you for your help. Christian -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
