AUUI was Apple's way of (unintentionally) screwing Mac users, by making them use a proprietary connector instead of one of the industry standards. The few Macs that had only AUUI sockets were given bad reviews and left on shelves by the comerical world. Apple quickly added the RJ45 connector...

Hmmm...that's why there are so many Powerbook 500 series sold :-/

802.11b is a one room / one wall technology. A waste of $.

Not really, unless your walls are in Langley, Va. or you're similarly paranoid.

We have 802.11 set up in our building (typical concrete/steelframe/drywall construction), and you can get a decent signal throughout that floor of that wing. A good card will get a usable signal on the floor above.

The WAP is about in the 'm' of the lower 'Pharmacy', there's an elevator shaft and a bunch of mechanicals in the center of the building, and someone in an office just above the top 'P' in pharmacy can connect with his 12" powerbook just fine.

For SoHo use it's a damned good solution.

802.11a is a bit better, but the speed dropoff still sucks. And it still suffers from interference issues.

That's because of the higher frequencies used, and unavoidable. The 'A' range on ours is not much beyond the lower 'Pharmacy' in the map.

That and, oh yeah, there are NO MAC DRIVERS!

As for 802.16; that is so ridiculously overpowered for home use it's not even funny.

Given that 99% of home users don't have network connections to the outside world faster than 802.11b, going to 70mb/sec solution is shooting gnats with a howitzer.

If you need that kind of speed to slog files around your own network, go wired.
