FWIW mine runs 24/7 as a router/firewall an, with the side door fan disabled and a single 9GB Seagate Barracuda in the front middle bay it's extremely quite, although i have also replaced the PSU with a like-new unit.
The side dorr fan is disabled ? Why ? Please tell us.

Apple goofed along the way somewhere. The Service Manual (don't ask me for it please) for the 9600 says that the side door fan should be mounted so that it blows out of the case, and that the fans on early models without the 'baffle' (aka piece of flimsy plastic) should be upgraded and have the fans turned around to blow thusly. This is a mistake. The rear PSU fan also exhausts hot air out of the case and so the effect is to lower the air pressure in the case (resulting in less air molecules to carry away heat) *and* destroy the natural convection from bottom to top of the case. This basically trashes the airflow system and thus the heat dissipation ability of the case.
I turned mine around to blow in and found the case was generally much cooler. I also couldn't stand the additional noise. Instead I pulled the covers off the spare PCI slots to allow air to pull in through there, and removed the little contacts on the door so the fan didn't get power. It's a lot quieter and doesn't show signs of overheating at all. I think the side door fan is overkill unless you have 1.6" 10krpm drives in the bottom of the case or something, or maybe a G4/800 card in the CPU slot. It is soooo quiet without it running.
So noted Mark. But I am sitting with my 9600 side door pointed right at me at floor level. and I can't hear it . I can feel the air pushed out side and back so I know the fans are running. At the 300 MHz level it does not seem to be very hot . But when I upgrade I'll reverse the fan somehow.
