I had an ethernet port on a 7300 that just up and died one day.  I
never did figure out why.  :/

Sure, check the pins.  I don't know why they'd get bent unless you
periodically unplug the ethernet cable or if there was a lot of tension
on the cable.  Also, inspect for burn marks indicative of a short or
power surge.
