I have four 7xxx-class Macs sitting here right now with bad RJ45

Check for bent pins, dirt, loose board connections, etc. Worth a try a least...

Thanks to all who responded.

In my case, it was never a question of the ethernet cables. I narrowed it down to the 7600's RJ-45 port by trying cables with other Macs and with other ports on the router. Everything worked except for the 7600 port.

I had never heard nor experienced a port going bad like that. In fact, in all my years of Mac computing and various machines, the only Mac components I have ever had "gone bad" by themselves were a PB 520c CPU, a hard drive and various PRAM batteries. I guess I expect my Macs to just work.

My current work around is to use the AAUI ethernet port with an adapter I already had. In the longer run I expected to migrate to a Beige G3 minitower anyway.
