Yes, but under OS 9 you cannot "see" the HFS-formatted files IIRC.

OS 9 recognizes HFS drives perfectly fine. You may be thinking of not seeing HFS+ drives from non-HFS systems.

Steve, you'll rapidly find that the Mac is *so* much better than Windows for this sort of thing. Very few programs litter the hard drive with small files all over the place. (not surprisingly, the worst offender is Microsoft...)

Programs are contained within their folders. The only other place you generally need to look for vital files is in System:Preferences where the preference files are stored. Many programs store their registration info in these files, so you'll want to copy those out, too. Just copy the whole preferences folder to your backup.

Unlike Windows, you can move things anywhere you want. To move your apps to another directory or another drive, just drag their folder there.

To back up your hard drive, just drag everything on it to the new drive (were you to use another HDD as a backup.) Simple. Just don't forget to copy stuff on the desktop, too...I did that...once. Lost some importand stuff. Unlike Windows, the desktop is a much more independent place. It *is* a folder (invisible) on the hard drive, but in the normal course of events you can't just drag it to the new drive. You drag the stuff on it to a folder or something.
