Oh yeah. Zalman makes a great pair of 5.1 surround headphones. They run about $50 and have three headphone (3.5mm) connectors (front, rear, center channels), so if you can figure out a way to get it into your Mac, you'll be in heaven. But with all the ads for mind-blowing sound, speaker systems still come 2nd best to good set of earphones that do away with room acoustics and deliver the purest signals thru a very short pathway to the eardrums.
I have just connected my 7600 to the stereo through either the headphone out or line out, it has great sound all in itself.
no hum or other noise, (and my stereosystem is good and very revealing when it comes to disturbances)

While I appreciate the comments about various home appliances to connect to the Mac. And how great they sound etc. ( Something I have done for the last 12 years. ) This all leaves the subject in question begging for an answer.
Apparently no one on this list does any serious sound work needing high quality output beyond the capacity of the native Mac specs.
And therefore cannot make a recommendation beyond the home consumer alternatives.
