While I appreciate the comments about various home appliances to
connect to the Mac. And how great they sound etc. ( Something I have
done for the last 12 years. )  This all leaves the subject in
question begging for an answer.

Apparently no one on this list does any serious sound work needing
high quality output beyond the capacity of  the native Mac specs.
And therefore cannot make a recommendation beyond the  home consumer
alternatives.

The reason you got little response outside of those, is you really didn't
explain what you're wanting to do? If you are  talking about building a
virtial studio? That isn't something you can do on the cheap... Dedicated
midi cards and FW/USB midi solutions aren't cheap. They seldom to never show
up used and that was one the things you asked about. So it's no so much that
nobody has done it but that the idea of tight budget and virtual studio
aren't exactly compatible.
