Hello All, Is anyone out there running the "special" (i.e. crippled) SpeedStream 5100b modem provided as part of SBC's DSL service with their PPC boxen via a router on the back end?
Right now, my 9600 is going directly through the 5100b. I need to find a router (not a switch or hub, please) that is compatible with the SBC version of the 5100b that will allow me to use my 9600 box (now) my G3 (soon) and additional boxes (later). So: anyone out there have direct experience with putting together a cheap-a55 LAN with SBC's wacky version of DSL? The reason I ask for "direct experience" is so as to avoid any conflicts with the 5100b. Believe me when I tell you that I'm undertaking this mess^dub^dub^dub project with Great Reluctance; I don't want to compound the problem by picking up gear that won't work, too. Oh, and to really put this out of the realm of sane, rational people: I'm really not prepared to go wireless right now. Frankly, I'm looking for an excuse to run Cat 5 cable throughout the house and I simply won't be cheated of that. Plus, wireless still seems to come at a premium and I'm trying to do this on the cheap. So...I'm hoping to pick up an older POS router, run some cable...and Bob's your uncle. I'd be grateful for any insights you guys could share. Best, James Fraser -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
