True, you have a couple points I didn't think of. If a video card is needed, I would still suggest keeping the original arrangement in the top slots and place the video card in the fourth one. As for A/V inputs, they unfortunately do not exist built-in for the 9500 or 9600, so a separate video-in/out card would be needed, if there is not one in use already.

The G4 upgrade should be fine, regardless of motherboard version. The board architecture had two revisions: Tsunami, which was the 8500/9500 and early 8600/9600 systems; this was also what the Power Tower Pro, Umax J700 and S900/910 and Daystar Genesis were all based on. Later Apple created a different motherboard (called Kansas) for the 8600/9600; this never found its way into any of the clones. All CPU upgrades should be fine in either type; it was only the original 604e CPUs that were not interchangeble.

The original poster didn't mention if they had a PCI graphics card, but if not, then this "keeping" of PCI order is not going to work. Both the 9500 and 9600 use PCI graphics cards, so you'll be losing a PCI slot up front. Also, if the 8600 has any onboard A/V inputs that you are using and rely on, they probably don't exist on the 9500 and most likely not the 9600. They both have just bog standard mic and speaker sockets. And finally - if your 8600 is a later model, the upgrade card will most likely only work in a 9600 of a similar type (I forget the architecture name, is it Kansas aka Mach or
something?)
