Mine 8500 thingy's worked fine in a move up to a 9500 recently ...

See the XPostfacto Forum (7500 -> 9600 gotchas?):

For an interesting discussion about 6 slot usage, and such ...

True about needing a video card, and a sound card, too if you want more than the onboard sound has to offer ...

M-Audio 2496 doesn't really seem to work very well ... although I'm running OS X 10.3.9 which is pushing development a bit ... and I had to use an older driver v 1.2.1 ...

Good luck with whatever you decide to explore ...

Should be fine as the 8500/8600 and 9500/9600 are just about
functionally identical aside from the second PCI bus on the 9500/9600
and 4 extra memory slots. I would recommend keeping the same PCI card
arrangement and place them only in the top 3 PCI slots until you are
sure everything is working, then you can rearrange or expand into the
lower 3 PCI slots.

The original poster didn't mention if they had a PCI graphics card, but if not, then this "keeping" of PCI order is not going to work. Both the 9500 and 9600 use PCI graphics cards, so you'll be losing a PCI slot up front. Also, if the 8600 has any onboard A/V inputs that you are using and rely on, they probably don't exist on the 9500 and most likely not the 9600. They both have just bog standard mic and speaker sockets. And finally - if your 8600 is a later model, the upgrade card will most likely only work in a 9600 of a similar type (I forget the architecture name, is it Kansas aka Mach or
something?)
