M-Audio 2496 doesn't really seem to work very well ... although I'm
running OS X 10.3.9 which is pushing development a bit ... and I had to
use an older driver v 1.2.1 ...

rely on,
they probably don't exist on the 9500 and most likely not the 9600.
They
both have just bog standard mic and speaker sockets. And finally - if
your
8600 is a later model, the upgrade card will most likely only work in
a 9600
of a similar type (I forget the architecture name, is it Kansas aka
Mach or
something?)
