A new problem rears its ugly head. Upon start up, (98se) windows gets about half way through loading then stops with the message 'windows protection error, you need to restart your computer' by restarting with a warm reboot it reloads and wants to start in safe mode. No3. I just use the up arrow to No1. normal start and everything loads normally. Anyone have a clue as to the reason for this behaviour ? it only started happening about 2 weeks ago. Many thanks to all who replied to my problem of XP always starting in 8 bit and not holding the 24 or 32 bit settings. The answer turned out to be the refresh rate of my monitor, altering from 60htz to 75htz solved it. Have a nice weekend all. Mike.
