I was at a convention about software piracy and heard the original pirated XP Corp copies are installed on about 40% (more or less) of the entire installed base of XP owners. With the US being one of the countries with the lowest numbers, while Canada has some of the highest numbers. It's also important to note that in the US the reward for reporting corporate piracy is VERY substantial while in Canada it is about a third of the US, far less if you work in exchange :(

You have the same copy of XP installed on two computers? Are they networked together? I know MS has been lenient at times for home users with the Pro, perhaps they are getting better still.

I ran into this problem with a friend's boss's computer on which he wanted
XP Pro. The corporate XP copy he gave me to install was not an original
disc. It installed fine with the code given (corporate always will, it does
not require activation). But when I tried to do an SP1 upgrade, I got the
same message. Apparently MS has a list of bogus/bootleg XP numbers and
blocks them from upgrades......

On a similar note, I was pleased that I could install, activate and upgrade
my original XP Pro (that I purchased when it first came out and which has
been running on my Micron work station) on my new laptop. The laptop came
with XP Home. I reformatted and installed XP Pro (mainly to get rid of all
the crap they put on the hard drive), put in all the updates and SR1 and
everything is running fine.....
