Shift+F5, remember? That will get you to the command prompt. It's at the bottom of the screen after hitting F8. If it's not there, then it will be by booting off the floppy I sent. (Did you get it?) Can you get into safe mode? If not, then I don't guess you'll be able to change the autoexec.bat (I'm not a DOS person, and I don't know if you can change the autoexec.bat from DOS).
I don't have ME on any PC's over here now, so I don't know where 'disable fast shutdown' is. I think, THINK, it may be on an advanced button somewhere after running MSCONFIG. However it may not be in the same place it was on '98. Someone here will remember. You may have to end up doing a LLF (low level format), or Fdisk, if the HD turns out to be the cause. Just reformatting the conventional way won't fix some disk problems that the LLF or Fdisk'ing it can. You'll need the manufacturer's boot disk utilities for best results with that (download from their website). The MBR could also be damaged (Master Boot Record). That can be fixed, or changed by running Fdisk I believe. These are all DOS commands done at the C prompt (or automatically by picking them on the menu of the manufacturer's floppy). Again, someone here will know the raw DOS commands. I can't recall if you have to boot from the ME floppy to get these commands. I think FDISK can be run from the ME boot floppy, not sure, and I think the MBR commands area are within it. Maybe someone that has used AOL can tell you about that. I don't see how AOL can screw up a boot, but like I said it before, I wouldn't put past them. It could also be other software that was installed on both attempts at fixing this. Does this problem happen immediately after installing windows, or is it OK at that point and starts to mess up after installing other software/programs? That answer would answer the question as to if any software or programs are doing it. -Clint God Bless Us All Clint Hamilton, Owner Want to exchange links with us? http://OrpheusComputing.com ----- Original Message ----- From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Clint, Thanks for the reply. First off, when pressing F8 brings me to a screen with a few choices....none of which are start in DOS. How do you get to DOS on ME? Also, where is 'disable fast shutdown" located at? This was a fresh install, but the original problem was the same thing we are having now. This leads me to believe some type of AOL problem since she did not have Norton installed the first time. Things seem so different in ME then they were in 98. [EMAIL PROTECTED] ----- Original Message ----- From: "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" If scandisk is running after every shutdown before windows loads, then something is running in the background causing it, by not shutting down when you reboot. You could be harming things by disabling scandisk after bad shutdown. If this is the case, then the OS could in this case have some corruption. Disable EVERYTHING loading with windows AND running in the background. Don't just cont-alt-del out of them, thinking they are disabled. Keep doing it until only the necessary remain (sys tray, explorer). Then try to shutdown and restart. Clint ----- Original Message ----- From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I posted for help on this a week or so ago.....I went over and reinstalled Windows ME. There were some other problems I had to go back over and fix, one was scan disk starting and hanging, the other, her AOL would not connect to webpage she uses most. I disabled scan disk after bad shut-down and showed her how to use Internet Explorer to get to WebPages easier. Now, when she reboots, it goes through all the hard ware detect, etc....but stops in MS-DOS with just a flashing cursor. I can not understand what can be causing this, with a fresh ME install. She has AOL and just a few other programs installed. I kept McAfee off the computer and put Norton SW 2003 on. My guess would be AOL or Norton. Has anyone had experiences with this type problem in ME? Thank you. Jeff Dougherty ============= PCWorks Mailing List ================= Don't see your post?
