I've been following a few threads, this being one of them, but haven't
had time
to chime in until now (midnight while working on 6 machines on my bench!).
I currently have 98SE,2K Pro, and XP Pro all on my laptop in a triple boot
configuration. The reason I do this is I never know what I'm going to walk
in to at a client's office on any given day and it REALLY helps having at
least
one machine (MINE :) ) up and running with the OS in question.
The way I accomplished this was to first create a primary partition of
10 Gig
(the size can be anything you need it to be) formatted in fat32 for my 98
install.
After I get this partition set up the way I want it, I boot to the Win 2K CD
and
create another 10 Gig primary (yes primary) partition and install 2K Pro on
that
partition. (Now, I always format my NT based partitions in NTFS for a
number
of reasons, but that is my personal choice. I read your comments on never
using
NTFS again so I take it you had a pretty bad experience in the past :( .
No
matter, I don't think using fat32 will make a difference in this case.
After I have the 2K partition setup like I want it, I then boot to the
XP Pro CD
and create another primary (Yes Primary) partition and install XP to it.
The reason
for this sequence of doing things is simple. First, If you do a dual
(triple,quad,etc...)
boot scenario and 95/98/ME is involved, it MUST(!!!) be installed first as
it will
damage the boot sector code for your NT based OS and I don't have to tell
you
the screaming and swearing that can take place after that happens! :) The
second
is NT based OS's can have up to 4 primary partitions per HDD where 98 can
only
have 1. This setup has worked flawlessly for me for over a year now. I'm
not sure
about Peter's comment about 98 not running on 1Gig of RAM, but this same
laptop
that I use all 3 OS's on regularly has 1 Gig of RAM. This may be another
case where
the experts tell us it won't work when it does like the physicists
determining that it's
impossible for a bumble bee to fly. (I'm not knocking Peter since it's
obvious he has
a good knowledge level from reading his posts for the last few years and
enjoying
his comments.)
This is by no means the only way to accomplish your goal, just one way I
happen
to be currently using so I know it works well. Somebody already mentioned
VM Ware
which may well be the best way if you have the software for it. You can
also use
Powerquest's Partition Magic to layout your partitions for you or change
them later
if you decide you'd like a different breakdown of the space. ( I love their
utilities!)
