Thanks Clint and I can do that I am sure. It is a Compaq emachine and it had
an older Canon printer that was very slow. BJC 250 I think. I installed the
Epson 640 on it and it worked for that day. Next day the LPT1 port was gone.
(via the device manager.) I will check the book on the Epson and go from
there. She also has a HP 3500 series scanner USB and it does not show up in
the printer folder as I would expect. Their software installs all kinds of
picture type software and I can't tell if the driver is installed.

Subject: Re: PCWorks: LPT1 port seems to have disappeared!
If it's a name brand PC you're going to have to ask them how to do that
(get in the BIOS). Usually it's F1, or Ctrl-S, or a few others.
If it's an other OEM or retail motherboard it's almost always [delete], but
in either case it should tell you on the bottom of the POST screen how to
enter the BIOS ("setup").
What ever LPT1 transfer protocol you select depends on the PRINTER. You'd
have to check the printer manual or their website to find out what protocol
the printer uses. Some older ones are SPP, the newer ones are ECC, ECP, or
ECC+ECP. ECP is "Extended (or "Enhanced") Capabilities Port" I believe.
The other two escape me at the moment. You choose these settings in the
BIOS.
Has a printer worked before on their PC? If not, or one was never
installed, the port could be bad (since you have already reinstalled the
drivers), but you need to try another cable to rule out a bad cable. If a
printer was used on their PC successfully before; (even though multiple
printers usually don't interfere with one another), you may have to TOTALLY
remove all drivers/software for the old printer.

I appreciate the replies and I have not checked the bios and I am not sure
how
to do that. What I have found out by checking a win98 working system is
when
I
use the hardware install feature I should select the ECP port. I am not
sure
what ECP stands for but I noticed that the ECP port in the working system
had
ECP (LTP) next to it. I can install that as I have already tried. If I
remember correctly when I went to printer properties then detail I had LPT1
in
there but when I tried to capture port it would not do anything. On the
working system it captured the port.

Have you checked the motherboard bios to see if the port somehow got
turned
off by accident. I used to to printer support for one of the major
manufacturer's out there and we always checked the bios setup to make
sure
it is turned on. I cannot think of anything else.
Sincerely;
Mike

This is not my computer but a friends. They have Win 98 and we installed
a
different printer and its driver which worked on my Win98 systems just
fine.
Now when we look at printers the Epson 640 is dimmed and when I go to
device
manager and choose ports I do not see the LPT1. I have tried capture to
no
avail and I am not sure if the port is defective all of a sudden or what.
I
also disconnected the port from the back of the computer which also did
not
help. I also reinstalled the drivers for the Epson 640 which also did not
help. I will change the cable next. Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot
this.
It worked the day I installed it.
Thanks Larry
