Assuming this is XP, it's just as they say; "TOTAL physical memory" which is your RAM, what you have installed, and "AVAILABLE physical memory", yes, what's still available after what all you have open is consuming. I'm not sure on a good ratio for you since there are too many variables.

When I go to startprogramsaccessoriessystem toolsSystem info and then look at the total physical memory displayed, is that my ram memory and is the available physical is that what is left at the time I am viewing it? If it is what is a good ratio to have there. It appears that I have 256mb and as I write this missive I have 50mb left. Is that all the stuff that is running in the background. Thanks

Answer
Yes on the OS (XP Home) Clint and thanks for the input. I have a friend that is using XP Home with 128m of ram and she uses AOL 9. Often dabbles in pictures and I believe the Ram would be better with 256mb. She is using a laptop Dell 2100 with a processor speed of
1ghz. How much of the stuff in the background can you get rid of without making the system suffer? I have turned off some of it but of coarse M$ send their message each time you start up. I know we need AV in the background and I think this version of AOL has Mcfee.
