512mb would be better for image manipulation. What kind of "message" are you speaking of?
You can turn off a bunch of things. For one, all of your software that doesn't need to be running like Adaptec/Roxio/Nero, faxing software, printer, etc, everything in your system tray except for what you MUST need. These should not be loaded until you need them. New printers especially add all sorts of garbage at startup that's not needed, even when you go to print! Of course any AV and anti-malware software and firewall, not withstanding. There's also a load of unnecessary unneeded and BAD XP Services that should be disabled. Start with Messenger, and anything with "Remote" in the name except for RPC, I think two of them can't be disabled but one can. There's probably 15-20 more I disabled. http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm . Some things they may not cover fully are "Windows Image Acquisition" which I MUST have on to scan, but some people don't, and "Spooler" has to be on in order to print on SP2, I think maybe SP1 as well. I have both of these for example disabled, but I have batch files on my Quick Launch Toolbar where I can start them with one click when I need them, then shut them down again with one click after I've finished with them. -Clint God Bless Clint Hamilton, Owner http://OrpheusComputing.com ) http://ComputersCustomBuilt.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "LarryB" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Support-OrpheusComputing. com wrote: OS? Assuming this is XP, it's just as they say; "TOTAL physical memory" which is your RAM, what you have installed, and "AVAILABLE physical memory", yes, what's still available after what all you have open is consuming. I'm not sure on a good ratio for you since there are too many variables. -Clint ----- Original Message ----- From: "larry" <[EMAIL PROTECTED] When I go to startprogramsaccessoriessystem toolsSystem info and then look at the total physical memory displayed, is that my ram memory and is the available physical is that what is left at the time I am viewing it? If it is what is a good ratio to have there. It appears that I have 256mb and as I write this missive I have 50mb left. Is that all the stuff that is running in the background. Thanks -- LarryB K & L Electronics Answer Yes on the OS (XP Home) Clint and thanks for the input. I have a friend that is using XP Home with 128m of ram and she uses AOL 9. Often dabbles in pictures and I believe the Ram would be better with 256mb. She is using a laptop Dell 2100 with a processor speed of 1ghz. How much of the stuff in the background can you get rid of without making the system suffer? I have turned off some of it but of coarse M$ send their message each time you start up. I know we need AV in the background and I think this version of AOL has Mcfee. -- LarryB K & L Electronics ============= PCWorks Mailing List ================= Don't see your post?
