The format of your replies are a bit confusing Larry. :-)

It's not an SP1 SP2 thing, since this happens on both. I saw
your screenshot off list, and that's what I thought it was. If
you are checking that box and clicking "ok", and you're NOT
opening MSCONFIG again, then it should not be coming up. If it
is, then something is changing something in the "Startup" tab
in MSCONFIG. Run a scan with all the anti-malware programs.
I'm still a bit confused on what exactly you're seeing though:
"I get the message just before the MSCONFIG one shows up". By
"message" do you mean that screenshot you sent? If so, then
what is the "MSCONFIG one" that shows up? After you check the
box and click "ok", the MSCONFIG utility should not come up.
If you don't check the box, then click "ok", the utility will
then open up.

you're
talking about that ridiculous annoying monotonous MSCONFIG
window that
pops up after every boot after you've changed something in
MSCONFIG,
well that's typical "spastic" XP behavior. The only way to stop
it is
stop changing something in MSCONFIG, or hit "cancel" when it
pops up
after boot if you don't need to change anything in it again.
Sometimes
SpyBot's "TeaTimer" will let you know that this has been added
to the
Startup folder and you can deny it to keep it from showing up,
but,
sometimes TT will NOT notice it. If you're talking about
something else,
then I don't know.

Unchecking items under the Startup tab in MSCONFIG should be
simple,
everything should be plainly named along with the full path.

it's just
as they say; "TOTAL physical memory" which is your RAM, what
you have
installed, and "AVAILABLE physical memory", yes, what's still
available
after what all you have open is consuming. I'm not sure on a
good ratio
for you since there are too many variables.

When I go to start>programs>accessories>system tools>System
info and
then look at the total physical memory displayed, is that my
ram memory
and is the available physical is that what is left at the time
I am
viewing it? If it is what is a good ratio to have there. It
appears that
I have
256mb and as I write this missive I have 50mb left. Is that all
the
stuff that is running in the background. Thanks

Answer Yes on the OS (XP Home) Clint and thanks for the input.
I have a
friend that is using XP Home with 128m of ram and she uses AOL
9. Often
dabbles in pictures and I believe the Ram would be better with
256mb.
She is using a laptop Dell 2100 with a processor speed of
1ghz. How much of the stuff in the background can you get rid
of without
making the system suffer? I have turned off some of it but of
coarse M$
send their message each time you start up. I know we need AV in
the
background and I think this version of AOL has Mcfee.

"What kind of "message" are you speaking of?"

The one that says you have modified the startup and are in
selective
mode. I can't get rid of the message even tho I click Don't
tell me this
anymore and then say ok. It still comes back when the computer
is
restarted. On batch files I do not know how to do that. I also
find it
difficult to tell what you are turning off in the msconfig
mode.

Answer

Maybe the message is a function of SP1 as she does not have SP2
yet. I
get the message just before the MSCONFIG one shows up usually
it is in
front of the MSCONFIG.

Thanks
