Jeff:
        Please be more specific as to exactly what you
want to do. If you want to partition the drive, format
it and install an operating system, you should have
very little "trouble".
If you expect to boot from the operating system that
is on the hard drive, a lot depends upon the operating
system.  
        The most reliable and in the long run, the 
least troublesome would be to install the operating
system on a formatted hard drive. Save the data
from the "old" hard drive to a slave drive so it can
be installed back when the operating system
is installed.  If your "old" drive has several
partitions, this could all be done on the one drive.
        What do you have available and what are
the limitations?
