Jeff,

The noise could be from a few different places.
The harddrive ( which means you're in eminent danger of loosing your data)
and it would
need replaced after you transfer the data to another drive. That is, if you
have data on there
you need to save.( which most people do)
The fan in the power supply. They can make all sorts of noises and the
off/on/off/on symptom
could be from a failing power supply.
The fan on the CPU or microprocessor (if it has one)
More than likely, you're loosing the clock when its unplugged because the
CMOS battery on the
motherboard is dead. This is a keep alive battery for memory storage in the
CMOS ram. It keeps the
clock, hard drive settings, and other configuration settings in memory for a
quick boot up. Otherwise,
with a dead battery, you may have to re-detect the harddrive and enter some
other settings. Alot of
this depends on what kind of a system you have and what components are
there. I'm not sure if the dead
CMOS battery could cause the off/on/off/on symptom. Maybe someone else could
comment on that one.
It would appear you have more than one problem though. You may have to open
it up and try to determine where the noise is coming from. Do you have a CD
with an operating system on it that could be installed on a new harddrive?
More than likely, you should probably get a new formatted harddrive with the
system and install your OS on it, if you have one on CD. If you don't have a
CD, have them install an OS for you. Then, if your old harddrive isn't
making noise, you can slave it to the new one. This is a matter of setting a
jumper on the 2 HD's (one to master, one to slave) and hooking them on the
same cable. The cable will most likely have 2 connectors. If the old HD is
noisy, slave it anyway and copy your data to the new HD you just purchased,
then remove the old noisy one. There are other ways to approach this and
other items to consider, but, at this point, we don't really know your whole
situation. Do you have any other PC systems or parts around? Give us an
indication of your level of experience with PC's.

Roger,
My home computer is making a loud noise, I think from the hard drive.
Last night, it started turning off/on/off/on until I removed AC power from
it.
Also, when it's unplugged, it loses it's time.
HD has Win 98 on it.
So, it sounds like I have to also get a new hard drive and put on with the
bare-bones and run this one has
a slave...which I am not sure how to do..only read about it.
Thanks for the reply, Roger, Wally.

I think you will experience trouble when it trys to boot up. I have tried
using a HD from one PC installed into another chassis and it wouldn't make
the boot up. It kept finding "new resources" and "new hardware" and finally
just locked up. The drivers for your old MB will most likely be different
from the new MB, unless you know it's the same model # MB, which is highly
unlikely. The last time I tried this was with a HD with WIN 98. Newer OS's
may not have as big a problem. I'm not that familiar with WIN XP....maybe it
could handle it ??? What OS do you have?

If I purchase a bare bone system..includes mother board, can I transfer my
hard drive from my current PC
over to the new bare-bone system with no trouble?
Thank you.
