Leonard, I just tried the "Save as PDF..." and opened the document in Acrobat and the document properties say "Quartz PDF Context" which tells me its not X-3 compliant. So basically I cant get:
1. the PDF q filter to work that was created by Color Sync Utility--thats when I get the errors
2. but I also dont want to send the document to the printer I want to SAVE the document as an PDF/X-3 what am I doing wrong?

I believe you have to first enable PDF Workflow - meaning you need to create a folder in your home directory's Library folder called "PDF Services".
