Actually, no version of Mac OS will natively support .afm/.pfm/.pfb, etc. files. The Mac has always used a special resource-based format for Type1 fonts.
Sure, you can put the files on the machine and reference them yourself - but the OS wont' load them and therefore users won't be able to normally author with them.
This is what I want to say. You create the font metrics by the same routines on every platform, independantly of the native format (like ressources on Mac, pfb on Windows and PS files on Sun/Unix). But you can still use the native implementation of the font.
Am I clear? to the point?
