Is this a plugin for Acrobat or a stand-alone tool?
A stand-alone tool.
On Mac OS X, there is an "Apple Type Services" Toolbox (and the alternative of using the OS X Print Manager to create PDF files).
Assuming you are a Carbon application in Mac OS X,
Correct.
those same (or most of the same) ATS routines will work on 8.6 and later with the Carbon toolbox installed.
According to information provided by Apple Computer Inc, this is not true for ATS (see <http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Carbon/Conceptual/ ATS_Concepts/atsfonts_intro/chapter_1_section_1.html> and Apple's "Universal Interfaces" version 3.4.2). However, I would be quite pleased if Apple docs are wrong here. Are you sure ?
Of course, the better question is why are you bothering with those old OS's in today's world??
Installed base.
