Tom, 
Life, Look and the other popular magazine's final, published images were 
nearly as much the product of the firm's photo editor's cropping-etc. as it 
was the photographer's skills. 
*Not many of today's photographers have the nerve to submit their work to 
someone knowledgeable and trustworthy for a critique (editing) of their work, 
for the same reason published writers hate submitting a 1500 page manuscript 
to their editors.
