Hi Dave, When I started out darkrooming quite some time ago, I also used a little red bulb. Tho' I don't remember how, I found out that it wasn't entirely "safe". I ended up picking up a "premier" safelight that has an amber filter (along with a couple others, what color and what for escape me now) for about $20 that served me well until I inherited a Kodak safelight.
