Caveman thinks that we should revise the "Rangefinder bad SLR good" school of thought. With some rare exceptions, it was valid in the 35 mm film days, when we were invaded by hords of dubious quality P&S cameras. Things have changed, give me some less noise at high ISO speed and less shutter lag in something like canon's G6 and I'll see no point in having a slapping mirror inside a camera.
It's all about seeing through the taking lens and no the rear LCD isn't a reasonable substitute for a finder (not for me in any case bearing in mind my 2 years with the Oly E which offers both)
I've taken to adding a little extra room on the right side of the viewfinder's image on my S4, so I can record what I want.
With an SLR, I pretty much see what I'm recording, and crop by what I include in my viewfinder.
But with the S4, or any other rangefinder, if I modify my techniques slightly, I can not step in so close, via lens or camera position, and after the image is recorded, crop a little, to accomodate my rangefinder-like images!
I can't afford the E-1 right now, so I accomodate.
The little S4 rangefinder zooms with my lens, but it is just a little offset. Big deal. I can accomodate. It's a mighty fine little camera, and if I have to adjust a little, so be it... Nothing is perfect!
