I prefer uninsulated leather boots (YMMV) and two pair of socks.  I
like synthetics against my skin.  The second layer can be cotton,
wool, whatever.  There are lots of options for the base layer, though.
 You might try a winter hiker from Thorlo.  Additionally, I really

 Buy your boots one-half to a full size longer to accomodate the
thicker socks.  When the temperature is above freezing I wear an
inexpensive mechanic's glove.  They're flexible and unintrusive (but
not water resistant at all).  You can find them with several different
brandings, but they're all about the same.  I buy the Kobalt brand
from Lowe's for about ten bucks per pair.  You can find them in the
tool section near the sockets.  When it's really cold I just deal with
the bulk and go for something like this:
