Distance from the focal plane may play affect quality but lens mount diameter isn't likely to to any significant extent, lens and sensor design would play a far greater roll WRT FF suitability (fall off and fringing etc.) > And of course the fact that those makers without a large lens > mount have opted for APS-C.
