Makes sense. If I had a couple spare K mount lenses, I'd try that. (Actually do need to find a donor K lens anyways, for the mount swap idea. I've got a 80-200 f4.5 Makinon in F mount that needs either a minor fix or a K mount conversion).

Right now my main 50 is a Super-Takumar, so the noise issue isn't there for portraits. My main K lens is a 200/4 XR Rikenon, so noise isn't an issue with it.

You're right though, I too have a need for intact K lenses.
This experiment was to see how it would do as a short
portrait lens.
I am now able to get the desired depth of field and proper
exposure without the annoying 'zer-zip' sound of the green
button or DOF preview.
Every time I'd see my subject look over to see what that odd
sound was, I knew the shot was lost. ;-(
I turn AF with AF lenses off for the same reason, too noisey.
The LCD and cute little beeper go too, by the time they hear
or see the D, they're "In the bag". ;-)

Only problem with that is some of us still use old K bodies, and it would be a bit of a pain to swap the lever in and out. If I didn't have my MX, I'd seriously consider it.

Pretty simple to make K lenses act like that.
Just remove, permanently or temporarily, the
aperture actuator lever. Voila', stop down Av!
I've done this to an M50/1.4, works fine.

It just occurred to me a couple weeks ago to put a screw mount lens on
my *ist film body. Can anyone else say "aperture priority"? Feel
free to point at me and laugh. I suddenly feel a multiple M42 lens
enablement coming on.

The sad part, and this was mentioned very recently in another thread,
is that the crippled mount limits the use of non-A K-mount lenses
while the old screw mounts work just fine. What the hell were they
thinking?

BTW, even with the lens stopped down the *ist's viewfinder is
surprisingly bright.
