That, I can answer. The D can be set with NR on or off. if NR is off
then the buffer holds 6 images (raw or jpg) and with it on it holds 5.
The D is not very speedy at writing out the images. It is supposed to
take advantage of Lexar's WA (Write Accelerated) technology. I think
about a 30X or so card is faster than the D, I have some Lexar 40X WA
cards - they are faster than my slow Kingston. However, they are no
faster than my recent design microdrives - basically within 1/2 sec of
each other for writing out a raw image. Essentially, it takes about
7-8 seconds to write out a raw file with either the 40XWA Lexars or
the Hitachi microdrives. So if you set it to continous exposure, and
hold down the shutter button, you will get 5-6 frames shot very
quickly and then every 7-8 seconds another frame will fire. This is a
case where the DS and later are quite improved. However, I would
really like a buffer of about 20 raw images.
Partially due to the indescribably idiodic choice on Pentax's part
to waste 25% filespace in the -D's RAW file right off the bat. The lack
of lossless compressing in the -D successors is at least somewhat
justifiable from a computing power standpoint, but the zero-padding of
12-bits to 16 in the -D was just stupid.
