Surprisingly, I have found the problem was often caused by the camera rather 
than the lens (even the lens contacts underneath was quite dirty (grease 
etc)).

I am a bit lucky because here in Vancouver Canada, my grandold MX was still 
serviced by Pentax (no parts required however).
