And you never lost all your work to fire, I have. Still while I think
all that is a good idea, I do not do it because of a combination of lack
of funds and laziness. Also, I do not think my photography is that
important on the grand scheme of things.

Hum...? Do you really want to know what I really don't do which is back
all images up to DVD, or what I think should be done which is:
1. Store copy on file server with mirrored hard drives and an
uninterruptible power supply.
2. Make 2 DVD backup sets.
3. Keep one DVD set on premises
4. Keep one DVD set off premises, like in a safe deposit box.
If you do that and still wind up losing your images, you can claim it is
an act of god instead of carelessness.
It all depends on your degree of paranoia too. For instance I store my files in
a read-only directory on a server with a dedicated RAID which is powered by a
long run time UPS. However I only produce one back-up DVD set, then I place it
in my fireproof safe along with any negs/slides. Two would be nice but to my
mind would be overkill :-)
