Neither Mercury nor Buick make small cars. I've never had any issues with the larger Big-3 products, at least not the more modern stuff. It's the small stuff that's either poorly engineered crap or simply poorly built variants of German engineering (See Chevy Cobalt, Cavalier, Pontiac Sunfire, etc).
