I haven't had a battery die in an MX in quite some time, but IIRC the LEDs start to flicker slightly when the batteries get iffy. If you diligently turn the meter off after each use the batteries will last quite some time after they start to flicker, but it's a good time to invest in a new pair to carry with you.
