I thought I'd give this a try again, so I downloaded and installed the Windows 
version.

It has colour management but not 16 bit colour support (maybe the Linux version 
is different?).  If I try to load a 16 bit tif, the program complains and 
converts to 8 bit.

Interestingly, if I load a Pentax PEF file via the UFRaw plugin, UF Raw 
seemingly passes the converted file to the Gimp without any complaint about it 
being 16 bit.  But it converts to 8 bit anyway.
