It was version 2.4 for Windows that I downloaded and tried.  Definately 
wouldn't load 16 bit tifs.

I'll be interested in reports on the Linux version.  I have Linux (Ubuntu 6.1) 
on my dual boot system but I'm not comfortable in compiling from source, which 
seems to be the only way to get the Linux version at present.
