Hi Shel, When I use an incident meter, it's a given that I position the mteter in the same light that is striking the subject. It's basically the same as using a grey card at the subject. It gives you a midpoint exposure, and if most of your values fall to one side or the other of a grey value, you'll be pretty darn close to a perfect exposure.
