Why be constrained by camera format?

1. I am not against other sizes/formats. I am just curious about motivations.

2. The harmony of certain proportions has been studied for many
centuries, starting with the famous Pythagorean school.
(It doesn't mean that only "harmonic" ones should be used.
Again, see #1 above.)

I quite like the Ribba series frames, especially the larger ones finished in black. The 70x100cm (28x40") one comes with a mat that I feel is cut in a peculiar way: the sides are about half the width of the top and bottom spacing, relative to the frame.

So in order to make better use of these frames I bought a Logan mat cutter from a local art supply house and some 32x40" mat material. When I cut a 3:2 ratio mat opening with 3" to 4" width, the top and side spacing evens-out nicely.

BTW: the black foil on the Ribba frame is rather too easily nicked. I don't think these frames will take much abuse or banging together, so I doubt they'd be much use for exhibitions, but you get what you pay for anyway. They are only $29 in Canada.

Matting with a half to full inch reveal allows a variety of formats to
look nice inside many different proportions of mats.

I like that myself.
Many frames were with mats, in which case the sizes were of the matted area.

Matting with some reveal like that also provides a useful place for a signature.
