I actually agree with William's view here. If I could afford this new digital Pentax 645, I'd buy it and never give full frame another thought (not that I think realistically about digital full frame to begin with given my budget). However, I can still think about medium format if I'm willing to shoot film and buy used kit, which I do realistically think about--course it's down-the-road-thinking, but perhaps that road ain't too long for a film kit. But I could never invest in digital medium format; I'd also have to rethink the digital darkroom because those medium format PEFs will surely take up space on one's harddrive. But of course, Pentax ain't thinkin about me anyway; like William says: Pentax is thinkin about those full-frame shooters with money & if the camera is up to snuff, I, too, think Pentax will prosper. Cheers, Christine

I agree about the "not competitive" part and the "doesn't have Sony's
money" part, but I have my serious doubts about the "reasons of
prestige" part. I'm not sure they can not have a full frame camera at
the sub-5kUSD price point and remain credible in Japan at this point.

Call me crazy, but I think they can get away with skipping 24x36 format entirely.
From a credibility standpoint, it's not a bad flagship, and it's not like
they are ever going to beat up the guys who are making 24x36 format cameras. The 645 seriously trumps 35mm full frame, and is about the best thing Pentax can do to sway the full frame camera users or potential buyers into looking at Pentax seriously.
I think they'll do fine with it.
