Hi Patrick,
for archival quality storage, I would be hesitant to label the CDs
(you mean the adhesive labels that you stick on the print side of
the CD? Not something else?). You never know how the label is gonna
react after say 10 years in an unknown environment. The big problem
is, CDs have NO protection over the actual data-recording layer.
A CD (or CD-R) is like this:

   up .......... 1
        __________ 2
        ---------- 3
   down ========== 4

1) the print layer. This is only a thin laquer-type layer. EASILY
SCRATCHED. Scratching it scratches the aluminium foil underneath,
DESTROYING the data UTTERLY.
2) reflective aluminium foil, EXTREMELY thin. This foil reflects the
laser back through the layer 3, but only where the 3 is transparent.
3) data layer, into which the laser burns the data (it's simply a dye
which changes its transparency when subjected to the heat of the
laser. From transparent it changes into opaque.
4)clear plastic, protecting against scratches. The
   laser reads through this plastic.

So if the adhesive label is made of something that will harm the
laquer, it might peel off someday taking the aluminium with it... I
don't understand why they don't laminate a second thick plastic layer
like the (4) on TOP of the CD too. So I would be VERY careful about
sticking something on the CD topside.

Good light,
   Frantisek Vlcek
