Polarizers are 1.) expensive, sometimes more expensive than the lens.
2.) they eat a lot of light between 2-3 stops if I remember correctly,
so no you wouldn't want to use the Polarizer to protect a lens, even if
protecting the lens was a good idea. There's some dispute about that as
well.
