Thanks, Paul.  That church is our city's primary landmark and it's probably the 
most photographed building in the city so it's a deep blow for us to see it in 
such a state.

I've seen photos of many of our other historic buildings in ruins and I find 
that deeply upsetting after they had withstood the original shock last year.  
Apparently the shaking was of a significantly higher intensity this time, but 
it didn't last as long.  So it was smaller on the Richter scale but higher on 
the Mercalli scale.

My gut feeling is that the cathedral is unrepairable.  The remaining structure 
looks generally intact but I can see enough cracks and instability that I think 
it won't be able to be made safe.
