I think that's how new chimneys are constructed these days, if they use masonry 
at all.  Our bricks were solid so this wouldn't have been possible.  You'd have 
to brace it from the outside.

That's precisely what had happened to our internal chimney that was ruined in 
September, that the builders are finishing off today.
