The message I'm currently reading has a blue bar highlighting it in the thread pane. When I delete that message, the next message should become highlighted and the text appear in the message pane. That's how it worked in Netscape and that's how it's always worked since I switched to Thunderbird.

What's started happening is the next message is briefly (couple of seconds?) highlighted and then no messages are highlighted. The next message is still there, but no message is selected.

I don't know anything about Thunderbird development being halted. I believe there was an update just a few days ago. In fact, I think that's when this weirdness started.

So, what's the next thing in email applications. I want something that's going to work like I've got Thunderbird set up now (minus the recent weirdness), which is to say to as closely resemble the old Netscape mail reader as possible and allow me to have ONLY plain-text email.

HTML email should display as plain text with the HTML code stripped out.

After I read an email message in Thunderbird I either drag it into a folder to
save or click the delete button to move it to trash. If I delete it, I should
get the next message waiting in my inbox and display it in the message pane.

In the last couple of days Thunderbird has started dropping the message, losing
focus.

The message is still there in my inbox, still shows in the Thread Pane, but the
message pane goes blank.

Anybody know why Thunderbird has started doing this?

i assume you've tried restarting Tbird?

i'm using Tbird 14 on OS X 10.7 with this layout:

folder pane| thread pane | message pane

when i delete the selected message in the thread pane, the next message is
selected and displays in the message pane; i've never seen the behavior you
describe, but i've seen some other minor UI quirks

you may already know that Mozilla has halted Thunderbird development; it will
probably be a few years before it stops working completely, but quirks are
unlikely to be fixed
