Agreed.

And any proposed "solution" that requires a large number of people to
change their habitual behaviour and adopt some new convention is
doomed to failure.

Submit a bug report. In fact, it's Open Source. Fix it yourself. Isn't
that why you chose Android over iOS?  ;-)
